Worldly Nonsense

O Timothy, guard and keep the deposit entrusted [to you]! Turn away from the irreverent babble and godless chatter, with the vain and empty and worldly phrases, and the subtleties and the contradictions in what is falsely called knowledge and spiritual illumination.

[For] by making such profession some have erred (missed the mark) as regards the faith. Grace (divine favor and blessing) be with you all! Amen (so be it).

1 Timothy 6:20-21 (AMPC)

We need to be so careful with what kind of talk we listen to and the kind of things we ourselves are speaking. Is it just ‘irreverent babble’ and ‘godless chatter’? Irreverent babble? Babble sounds like babel, do you remember the Biblical tower where everyone was talking in their own language? That sounds more like today where everyone seem to have an opinion and a revelation of God outside the written word. Revelations that are at best worldly notions disguised as knowledge and ‘spiritual illumination’.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the speech and mindset of the world around us. We have to be aware of the subtleties of this. It may not sound wrong on the surface, but it is just worldly babble. Phrases like “It doesn’t matter how you worship as long as you worship God” may sound Okay but is very dangerous. We end up off track when we continue to be sucked into this kind of worldly nonsense. Especially in this day and age, we need to be on guard and not be entertained by all of this.

See our text in The Message Translation of the Bible: And oh, my dear Timothy, guard the treasure you were given! Guard it with your life. Avoid the talk-show religion and the practiced confusion of the so-called experts. People caught up in a lot of talk can miss the whole point of faith. Overwhelming grace keep you!

Worldly notions, worldly ways hinders God’s amazing grace.

My declaration and confession: Lord help me to guard and treasure the truth of your word in every circumstance of my life above the opinion of men.

Ignite Thought: False knowledge in any area is worse than ignorance. Guard against it!
